Indiana father arrested for leaving children in hot car

An Indiana father has been charged with four felony counts of neglect of a dependent after allegedly leaving his four young children in a hot car at a Walmart parking lot in Indianapolis.

Eric Andrews Jr. was arrested on July 10 following the incident at the store located at 5835 W. 10th Street. Police said the children, ages 1, 3, 3, and 4, were found profusely sweating inside the vehicle with the windows slightly cracked and no air conditioning on, though the engine was running.

An off-duty officer at the store discovered the children, one of whom was sleeping on the floorboard. Paramedics evaluated the kids but none required hospitalization, and a family member later picked them up.

Andrews and the children's mother admitted to police that they left the children in the car for a short time and that the air conditioning was not working. The mother became uncooperative during the response, while Andrews attempted to calm the situation. Surveillance video from the store helped lead to the arrest.

Andrews bonded out after booking and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 31 for a pretrial conference.
