InterContinental Sapporo opens to boost Hokkaido's MICE tourism

The InterContinental Sapporo, Hokkaido's first luxury international hotel, opened on October 1 in the capital. Operated by UK-based IHG Hotels & Resorts, it signals a push to expand MICE tourism in the Nakajima Park area. A new convention center is planned nearby for completion in 2033.

Arriving in Sapporo on a mid-November evening, the distinctive scent of fallen ginkgo nuts from the city's trees greets visitors. Amid the vibrant autumn foliage, the Nakajima Park area in southern Sapporo embodies the Hokkaido capital's seasonal charm.

The InterContinental Sapporo, operated by UK-based IHG Hotels & Resorts, began operations on October 1 as the city's first luxury international brand hotel. It represents a key step in expanding MICE tourism capabilities in the Nakajima Park district over the coming years. MICE stands for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions, focusing on business-oriented travel.

Directly across the street lies the 61-year-old Sapporo Park Hotel, set to close permanently in February 2027 for a full demolition. In its place, the city plans to construct a 26,000-square-meter convention center, with completion targeted for 2033. These developments point to a upscale transformation for the Nakajima Park area.

The hotel's opening strengthens Sapporo's appeal for international events, fostering growth in high-end tourism infrastructure.
