Magdeburg prosecutors are investigating Syrian psychiatrist Taleb al-Abdulmohsen for negligent manslaughter. A 54-year-old patient died shortly after discharge from a clinic in Brehna due to a medication overdose. The allegations stem from a criminal complaint filed by the deceased's relatives.

Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a Syrian doctor and head of psychiatry at the Asklepios Clinic Brehna near Magdeburg, is under scrutiny by authorities. Investigations for negligent manslaughter in office began following the death of a 54-year-old patient. The man was discharged from the clinic on February 28, 2023, and died the next day, March 1, 2023, from an overdose of prescribed medications.

The patient had suffered from severe depression and other mental health issues. Al-Abdulmohsen served as the senior physician responsible for the ward where the man was treated. The deceased's relatives filed a criminal complaint with the Magdeburg prosecutor's office on March 3, 2023. Consequently, al-Abdulmohsen was provisionally arrested on March 10, 2023, but released just three days later.

The doctor denies any wrongdoing, stating that he acted professionally. The clinic management has expressed support: 'Mr. al-Abdulmohsen is a highly qualified physician whom we fully trust,' according to a statement. Prosecutors are examining whether the discharge and medication contributed to the patient's death. Expert reports on the circumstances of the death are ongoing.

This case highlights challenges in psychiatric care in Germany, particularly in balancing patient autonomy with risk assessment. Al-Abdulmohsen, who has worked in Germany since 2015, is known for his efforts with refugees and the mentally ill. The investigations continue, with no court proceedings yet scheduled.
