Joel McHale delivers dramatic performance in Scream 7

Joel McHale plays sheriff Mark Evans, the husband of Neve Campbell's Sydney Prescott, in the hit horror sequel Scream 7. The film has surpassed $200 million at the global box office and is now available for rental on various platforms. McHale's portrayal has drawn praise for its versatility and competence.

In Scream 7, the sixth installment in Wes Craven's franchise directed by Kevin Williamson, McHale portrays Mark Evans, a sheriff in a sleepy town under threat from the Ghostface killer. As Sydney Prescott's husband and father to their children, including teenager Tatum played by Isabel May, Evans navigates family tensions and danger with skill. He mediates a heated argument over a borrowed leather jacket from Scream 2, establishing chemistry with Campbell amid threats from the killer. McHale's character stands out as competent and supportive, offering good instincts, active listening, and physical resilience against attacks—qualities rare among the franchise's typical male figures. McHale told Variety in a recent chat that his work on the film, alongside cameos in The Bear, has been rewarding. “I still can’t believe that people want to point a camera at me and hit record. When I got to Hollywood 25 years ago, my hope was to do all of this,” he said. He praised his scenes with Campbell: “Every scene with her is fireworks. It felt similar to working with Jeremy Allen White, being there with somebody who can hit the ball back harder and faster.” The role was offered weeks before production, prompting McHale to consult his teenage son, who urged him: “What are you, an idiot? You might be relevant again if you take that job.” An industry horror fan at last month's Paramount lot premiere noted that Evans “actually believes the women around him” when sensing danger.
