Lift technician killed by falling metal at Hong Kong luxury estate

A 26-year-old lift technician died after being struck by a large piece of falling metal while carrying out maintenance inside a shaft at Pacific View luxury estate in Hong Kong's Stanley. Police said the L-shaped iron piece fell from the rooftop machine room. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

The 26-year-old man was working inside the shaft on the eighth floor of Block 4 at Pacific View on Tai Tam Road in Stanley on Monday, while three colleagues were on the upper floor, a police force spokesman said.

The investigation suggested an L-shaped iron piece, about a metre long and 10cm wide, fell from the rooftop machine room and struck him. The case is being followed up by the Western District crime squad.

The Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims said the worker had been replacing lift cables at the time. Pacific View is a luxury estate in Hong Kong's Stanley district.
