Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii celebrates first anniversary

One year after its release, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii continues to stand out as a highlight in Sega's lineup. The spin-off game features Goro Majima in a pirate-themed adventure across the Hawaiian Islands. Developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has crafted a chaotic yet engaging experience that builds on the Yakuza series' strengths.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii launched on February 21, 2025, and has since become a notable entry in Sega's portfolio. The game follows Goro Majima, a former yakuza member, who awakens on Rich Island with amnesia. He teams up with a treasure hunter and the hunter's asthmatic son to assemble a pirate crew and navigate the Hawaiian Islands in search of treasure.

The narrative draws from events in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth but establishes its own standalone story. Gameplay blends elements reminiscent of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and Grand Theft Auto, involving activities such as competing in pirate coliseums, battling giant squids, and engaging in naval combat. Players can explore mini-games, strengthen their crew, and uncover Majima's lost memories, all while employing his various combat styles.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio emphasizes Majima's chaotic personality, integrating it with themes of friendship and self-discovery. The story explores Majima confronting his past while shaping his future, set against a backdrop of vibrant island exploration. Additional features include karaoke and kart racing, contributing to the game's expansive and anarchic feel.

The Yakuza series, known for its mix of gameplay, worldbuilding, and narratives, finds a fresh expression here, softening some criminal elements to focus on a more sympathetic cast. This approach delivers dozens of hours of content, maintaining tight design despite the variety of activities.
