LPG shortage in Mangaluru hostels prompts biofuel kitchen push

Hostels of major educational institutes in Mangaluru and Udupi have not yet faced a shortage in the supply of cooking gas (LPG) cylinders, though some have modified their food menus to conserve gas. Hostel managers remain apprehensive about the uninterrupted supply continuing beyond a week. Amid the crisis, Tejaswini Ananthkumar, Managing Trustee of Adamya Chetana, which serves mid-day meals to thousands of school children daily, stressed on social media on Wednesday the need for biofuel-based 'no-LPG kitchens'.

Hostels of major educational institutes in Mangaluru and Udupi have not faced a dearth in the supply of cooking gas (LPG) cylinders so far. Some have adjusted their food menus to save on gas usage. Those managing the hostels are worried that the uninterrupted supply might not last beyond a week.

During this time of potential crisis, Tejaswini Ananthkumar, Managing Trustee of Adamya Chetana—an organization that serves mid-day meals to thousands of school children daily—took to social media on Wednesday to emphasize the need to adopt biofuel for 'no-LPG kitchens.'

According to the report, while no severe shortages have occurred yet, the apprehensions among managers are growing, leading to a focus on alternative energy options.

Building on March 5 directive to refineries, the government invoked the Essential Commodities Act on March 10, 2026, amid worsening LPG shortages from the Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz disruptions. Commercial supplies have halted, severely impacting hotels, restaurants, and crematoriums across India, while prioritizing domestic use.

As fears of LPG shortages intensify due to West Asia conflict disruptions, the Indian government has assured adequate supplies and cracked down on black-marketing, while induction stove demand continues to surge following the initial rush reported earlier this week. Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged calm, promising to overcome the crisis like during Covid.

Despite government assurances of adequate supply, food cart owners and households in Delhi report long delays and rising costs in procuring cooking gas cylinders. Md. Rehmat Ali, a biryani shop owner in Chittaranjan Park, said his supplier last delivered on February 28 and has been unresponsive since. Officials stated the situation is under control and launched a control room against black marketing.

Despite the government doubling daily allocations of 5-kg LPG cylinders to stabilize supplies disrupted by the West Asia conflict, high upfront costs, low awareness, and inconsistent availability are keeping them out of reach for migrant workers and students. Of the 1,368 cylinders set aside daily, only about 50-55% are being purchased from Oil Marketing Companies.

The government has doubled the daily quota of 5-kg LPG cylinders for migrant workers amid supply disruptions linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas aims to stabilise fuel supplies with this move. Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma announced the decision via a letter dated April 6.

Following earlier government assurances on LPG supplies amid West Asia conflict fears, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reiterated steady availability during a Rajya Sabha discussion on supplementary grants. She detailed ramped-up domestic production and imports through the Strait of Hormuz, as opposition MPs raised shortage impacts on temples and livelihoods.
