Lucky Montana resigns as MKP MP amid party instability

Lucky Montana has resigned as a member of Parliament for the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), prompting analysts to highlight internal instability. The party confirmed the resignation on December 1, 2025, noting his continued commitment despite the departure. This follows the recent exit of fellow MP Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla.

On Monday afternoon, December 1, 2025, the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) announced the resignation of Lucky Montana from his position as a member of Parliament in the National Assembly. The party issued a statement accepting his departure while emphasizing that Montana remains a committed member of the organization and its political mission. It praised his service as marked by 'loyalty, courage and unwavering conviction,' and described his contributions as offering 'steadfast objectivity and constructive guidance' to the party and South Africans.

This resignation comes shortly after that of fellow MKP MP Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, raising questions about the party's internal dynamics. Political analyst Sandile Swana described Montana's exit as a sign of deeper instability within the MKP. He attributed this to the party's practice of recruiting members with pending legal matters, including civil and criminal cases, which has created ongoing strain.

Swana noted that such issues may overwhelm some MPs, leading to resignations. He stated, “It’s a sign of the continuing crisis within MK, which comes out of the situation where they successfully admit all recruited people who have pending legal matters of civil cases, others have criminal cases that are pending or ongoing. So I think that, that is a general pattern. So some of them, at one point or another maybe overwhelmed by the surrounding legal problems and have to resign their positions. We have not been given specifics about Montana, but he does have significant legal problems himself.”

Montana faces notable legal challenges, including disputes with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) over tax records and claims related to R36 million and properties. Details of his resignation remain unclear, but the events underscore potential vulnerabilities in the party's structure.
