M5.6 quake hits Yamanashi in central Japan, nearby areas

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Yamanashi Prefecture and surrounding areas on Friday evening with no tsunami warning issued.

The quake occurred at 10:29 p.m. at a depth of around 20 kilometers. It measured lower 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in Fujikawaguchiko.

Parts of the Tokyo metropolitan area experienced intensity 4 shaking. Tokaido Shinkansen services were temporarily suspended while other lines resumed after about 15 minutes.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed officials to gather information and inform the public promptly. No abnormalities were detected at nuclear facilities or Mount Fuji volcanic activity.

An official in Fujikawaguchiko described the shaking as upward-thrusting. The area lies near multiple tectonic plates where magnitude 6-class quakes occur roughly once every decade.
