Madrid mayor urges companies to allow telework for Pope León XIV visit

Madrid mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida announced on Thursday measures to manage Pope León XIV's visit from June 6 to 9, including traffic restrictions and a call for telework.

The Madrid City Council is preparing a major operation for what the mayor describes as an event of unprecedented scale. Martínez-Almeida has urged companies to facilitate telework between June 3 and 9, the same days when municipal employees will be allowed to work from home.

Traffic restrictions will begin gradually from Thursday, May 21, in areas such as Paseo de la Castellana and Plaza de Cibeles. Near-total closure of central lanes is scheduled from June 3, with the heaviest impact expected between June 4 and 11.

Free EMT bus and BiciMAD services will be provided during the visit. The council has arranged 33 public spaces to house pilgrims and six peripheral parking areas for buses. The vigil is expected to draw half a million people to Plaza de Lima and the mass up to one and a half million at Cibeles.
