President Claudia Sheinbaum published a decree ordering remote work for federal employees in Mexico City on June 11, the day of the 2026 World Cup opening. The government of Jalisco adopted similar measures. The step aims to reduce traffic during the Mexico vs South Africa match.
The decree, published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación on June 9, applies only to federal public administration employees in Mexico City. It excludes health, security, emergency personnel and those linked to the World Cup. President Sheinbaum explained the goal is to avoid mobility issues on the day of the opening match at Estadio Ciudad de México. Classes were also suspended in capital schools. Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus announced remote work for state public sector workers and class suspensions on June 11. Estadio Guadalajara will host four group stage matches.
