Major Ethereum holders back new research lab

SharpLink, Bitmine and Consensys CEO Joe Lubin are funding Ethlabs, a new nonprofit research organization launched by five former Ethereum Foundation researchers.

Ethlabs was announced on Monday with backing from SharpLink Gaming, Bitmine Immersion Technologies and Joe Lubin. The group also includes Anchorage Digital, Octant and SNZ.

The organization is led by Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnabé Monnot, Caspar Schwarz-Schilling, Josh Rudolf and Julian Ma. Their prior work covered Ethereum scaling, data availability, protocol economics and network finality.

Initial efforts will target faster transaction settlement, greater network capacity and better infrastructure for tokenized assets and stablecoins. All research will be published openly with independent grants administration.

The launch follows several high-level departures from the Ethereum Foundation, including the recent exit of co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang.

Hva folk sier

Initial X reactions highlight positive views on Ethlabs as a decentralized research boost for Ethereum's institutional growth, backed by major holders like Bitmine and SharpLink. Skeptical posts question it as potential governance theater or power moves by insiders like Joe Lubin. Neutral summaries note the focus on scaling and talent retention amid Ethereum Foundation changes. Sarcastic takes contrast it with other crypto performance.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted on X about shifting the Ethereum Foundation toward a narrower role. He said the organization will prioritize longevity over breadth while reducing ETH sales. The foundation will focus on censorship resistance, openness, privacy and security.

The Ethereum Foundation completed its third over-the-counter sale of 10,000 ETH to BitMine Immersion Technologies, valued at roughly $22.9 million. The transaction funds the foundation's operations, including research and community grants. This follows similar sales last week and in March.
