Minister for Industries S. Keerthana has proposed a dedicated policy framework for the fireworks industry in Sivakasi during an internal meeting. The move aims to formalise the sector and address stakeholder needs.
S. Keerthana, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce, made the proposal at a meeting with officials from the Industries and Guidance Departments. She stressed the need for reforms to tackle loopholes in worker safety, welfare and factory operations.
Sivakasi produces nearly 90% of India’s fireworks. The industry is valued at around ₹6,000 crore and includes over 1,100 factories. Keerthana said the policy would bridge gaps through targeted measures for all stakeholders.
Activists have called for better safety standards for women handling chemicals and an end to illegal units and child labour. Industrialists noted that a Supreme Court ban on barium nitrate has affected production and that exports remain limited to a few large players.
