MLB issues suspensions after Fenway benches-clearing incident

Major League Baseball has disciplined four players from the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals following a benches-clearing incident during Tuesday night’s game at Fenway Park.

Michael Hill, Senior Vice President of On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, announced the penalties. Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli received a seven-game suspension for initiating and participating in the incident. Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras was also suspended for seven games for his actions during and after the confrontation.

Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas drew a five-game suspension, while Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton received a three-game ban. All four players were also fined undisclosed amounts.

The suspensions are scheduled to begin tomorrow unless the players appeal. The Red Sox are set to play at Angel Stadium, and the Nationals will host the Pittsburgh Pirates.
