Morena accepts Anaya's challenge to revoke governors in 2027

Mexico's Morena party accepted PAN Senator Ricardo Anaya's proposal to extend mandate revocation to state governors in 2027. Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, Morena's vicecoordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, challenged four PAN governors to amend their local constitutions. The initiative aims to align the presidential consultation with midterm elections for greater citizen participation.

The debate over mandate revocation has heightened political tensions in Mexico ahead of 2027. Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, Morena's vicecoordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, stated in an interview on El Financiero Televisión's EntreDichos that the party 'takes the word' from Ricardo Anaya and accepts applying revocation to states as well. 'I take the PAN's word and we accept that mandate revocation also applies to governors,' Ramírez Cuéllar affirmed.

The Morena lawmaker specifically challenged PAN governors: Mauricio Kuri in Querétaro, Tere Jiménez in Aguascalientes, Maru Campos in Chihuahua, and Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo in Guanajuato. He urged them to amend their local constitutions to guarantee this 'citizen right.' Ramírez Cuéllar argued that if the opposition accuses President Claudia Sheinbaum of governing poorly, it should not fear the consultation on midterm election day. 'If President Sheinbaum is governing badly, then the opposition should not worry that the consultation happens on election day,' he explained, since 'a candidate hangs onto someone who is governing well to boost their vote, not someone governing badly.'

Ramírez Cuéllar's proposal seeks to advance the presidential consultation to coincide with the June 2027 elections, renewing the Chamber of Deputies, 17 governorships, and other positions. Among the benefits, he highlighted cost reductions, higher citizen participation, and elimination of 'electoral fatigue.' He denied it would contaminate the electoral process and emphasized it strengthens citizen oversight of rulers.

Anaya had proposed including all rulers, especially those with allegations of organized crime ties, and that if the president loses, an immediate election be called instead of Congress appointing a successor. President Sheinbaum rejected extending revocation to state governors, batting away the idea of including the 'gobers.'
