Ndlea officers and soldiers attacked in edo drug raid

Operatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and army personnel faced an ambush during a raid in Ukpuje town, Edo State. One officer sustained a hand injury from a sharp object but is expected to recover fully. The incident highlights ongoing resistance to anti-drug operations in cannabis-prone areas.

On Monday, October 27, 2025, a combined team of NDLEA operatives and army personnel came under attack while advancing through Ukpuje town in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the NDLEA state commander, described the event in a statement, noting that the community is notorious for cannabis cultivation and trafficking.

As the team moved forward, local cultivators ambushed them, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The hostile environment forced the operatives to abort the operation initially and retreat for safety before proceeding later. During the confrontation, one NDLEA officer was struck by a sharp object on the hand. Ofoyeju confirmed that the officer has received medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery, with no lives lost.

The statement detailed: “A combined team of NDLEA and Army personnel came under attack on Monday at Ukpuje town, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State. Unfortunately, one officer was struck by a sharp object on the hand. This officer has since received medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery.”

Ofoyeju commended the bravery of the officers and soldiers involved, stating, “Our mission here is to ensure that illegal drug activities are disrupted, particularly in areas notorious for drug cultivation. Although we faced resistance, we are grateful that no life was lost, and our team was able to carry out the operation efficiently.”

This raid forms part of NDLEA's broader strategy to combat drug trafficking and enhance community safety in Edo State, where illicit cannabis cultivation remains a persistent challenge. The agency plans to intensify efforts, with Ofoyeju adding, “We will not relent in our pursuit of a drug-free society. Operations like these are crucial in our fight against narcotics.” Recent activities include arrests at drug sale spots, convictions of dealers, and sensitization programs on drug abuse risks. The event underscores the collaboration between law enforcement agencies to address the growing issue of narcotics in the region.
