On November 7, 2025, an explosion occurred in the mosque at SMAN 72 Jakarta, Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, specifically in the Komando Daerah Maritim TNI Angkatan Laut complex, while students and teachers were performing Friday prayers. The first blast was heard during the sermon, followed by a second from a different direction. The incident is suspected to stem from bullying that prompted a student with initials F to make a homemade bomb.
Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno, on Saturday, denied rumors that many students wanted to transfer schools after the explosion. "Actually, it's not like that," he said in Jakarta. He acknowledged a request from parents of a severely injured student whose home is far from the school, but authorities are ready to assist if they transfer. "No, they want to continue schooling there," Rano added. Principal Tety Helena Tampubolon confirmed, "That's an untrue rumor." Initially, some parents feared psychological impacts, but after counseling, the children wanted to stay until graduation.
Psychiatrist teams from the DKI Provincial Government and other agencies provided psychological support. "They all came down to provide psychological support," Rano stated. He also urged the Health and Education Departments to thoroughly investigate the bullying root causes. "The root problem must be found... so this doesn't happen again," he said during the Kick Off for the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Towards Women and Children 2025.
The perpetrator is isolated at RS Polri, while other victims are at Rumah Sakit Islam Jakarta. The DKI government will fund treatment until recovery. Explosive materials were allegedly bought online by the perpetrator's parents, who thought it was for extracurricular activities. Social Minister Saifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul) stated that the Ministry of Social Affairs is ready to provide social rehabilitation and trauma healing support for the perpetrator, in collaboration with police and deradicalization institutions. President Prabowo Subianto has tasked relevant ministries to prevent similar incidents.
