Rare 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder set for Monaco auction

A highly sought-after 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder, one of only 40 ever made, will go under the hammer at RM Sotheby's Monaco auction this April. The car, restored to pristine condition by its current owner Andy Prill, carries an estimate of $4.05 million to $4.4 million. This price is lower than its $4.9 million sale at a 2018 auction.

The Porsche 550A Spyder boasts a storied racing history. American driver Jack McAfee originally owned it, securing victories from Phoenix to Palm Springs and contributing to over 25 race wins overall. It later passed through various American collectors, a South African collection, and into the hands of Japanese collector Hui Takahara in 1993, who sent it for restoration at Freisinger Motorsport in Germany. Andy Prill acquired the car in August 2019 and has spent six years on a comprehensive overhaul, including rebuilding the original matching-number engine and gearbox, rendering it 'box-fresh' as he describes it. Prill also retains extensive documentation, such as race programs and the original driver's manual. RM Sotheby's executive Harvey Stanley has dubbed it the 'holy grail' of vintage Porsches, known in its era as the 'Giant Killer' for defeating larger-engined rivals with its lightweight design. The car last sold for $4.9 million at RM Sotheby's 2018 Monterey auction. Now, ahead of the April 2026 Monaco sale, the estimate of $4,050,000 to $4,400,000 reflects its restored state, potentially offering value to collectors.
