The Boston Red Sox have expressed interest in acquiring Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline. The Angels are open to proposals for the 25-year-old player. Boston views Neto as a strong fit given its needs at the position.
The Red Sox have surged into the American League Wild Card race after a 15-game win streak that ended on Wednesday. They currently hold the third AL Wild Card spot. Shortstop Trevor Story is on the injured list with a sports hernia and is not expected back until mid-August at the earliest.
Neto ranks fifth in bWAR among players who have played at least 50 percent of their games at shortstop since the start of the 2024 season. He has hit 19 home runs this year. The Angels would likely seek a substantial return for Neto, who has more than two years of Major League service time and three seasons of club control remaining.
Reports indicate the Red Sox showed interest in Neto during the offseason as well. Boston's farm system is considered middling after graduating several top prospects. One potential piece in a deal could involve infielder Marcelo Mayer.
