Senator Waldo Fernández claims strong evidence against detained secretary Karina Barrón

Morena Senator Waldo Fernández from Nuevo León stated there is strong evidence against Karina Barrón Perales, secretary of Human Development in Monterrey, arrested for false declarations and possible extortion during the 2024 campaign. President Claudia Sheinbaum ruled out any political motive and supported ongoing investigations. Monterrey's government reaffirmed its respect for the rule of law, without official details on the arrest.

On March 2, Waldo Fernández, Morena Senator from Nuevo León, commented on the arrest of Karina Barrón Perales, who serves as Secretary of Human Development and Substantive Equality in Monterrey municipality. According to Fernández, the detention relates to a 'setup and fabrication of facts' filed with the Nuevo León State Attorney General's Office, stemming from a false accusation of harassment or violation against him during the 2024 election campaign, when Barrón ran against him.

Fernández noted that she is not the only one involved: three individuals are detained so far, including lawyer Gustavo García Rojo and Berenice, arrested the previous day. 'I can't say much, but the evidence is very strong,' the senator stated, requesting that the imputation hearing be public to ensure transparency.

In her morning press conference that day, President Claudia Sheinbaum outlined the events: 'It's a matter of an accusation the senator faced for harassment or violation, and he proves it was false. So the detention of this person is for falsely accusing, and it seems there was also extortion.' Sheinbaum stressed it is not a political issue and that there is sufficient evidence of falsehood and extortion, based on security cabinet information.

Monterrey's municipal government issued a statement the previous Sunday, stating it lacks details on the detention's motive, which unofficial information suggests is unrelated to public administration. 'The Municipal Government reiterates its absolute respect for the Rule of Law,' the text reads, trusting federal authorities like the Attorney General's Office to conduct investigations in line with legality, due process, and human rights.

Barrón's arrest took place in San Nicolás de los Garza, and Fernández filed the complaint. Authorities continue the inquiries, emphasizing presumption of innocence and transparency.
