Godzilla Minus One, released in 2023, achieved remarkable success as the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla movie to date and the first in the series to secure an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Set in the immediate aftermath of World War II, the story depicted a Japan grappling with devastation from the atomic bomb, its economy at 'zero' before plummeting to 'minus one' with the arrival of the destructive Godzilla. The narrative centered on Kōichi Shikishima, a kamikaze pilot played by Ryunosuke Kamiki, who contends with personal guilt from the war while forming a bond with Noriko Ōishi, portrayed by Minami Hamabe, a war-displaced woman caring for an orphaned child.
