Two men charged in fatal shooting of Nashville college student

Police in Nashville have arrested two men in connection with the January shooting death of a Fisk University student. The victim was killed while driving back from a gymnastics event. Authorities say jealousy was the motive behind the attack.

Brayden Carter, 19, and Damarion Coleman, 18, face first-degree murder charges in the death of 20-year-old Andre Justus Bell. Carter also faces gun charges, while both men are charged with attempted murder. Coleman’s case is being handled in juvenile court because he was 17 at the time of the incident.

The shooting occurred on January 11 on I-65 northbound. Bell was driving his white Nissan Sentra after volunteering at a Fisk University gymnastics meet at the Nashville Fairgrounds. A dark-colored sedan pulled alongside and someone inside opened fire, striking Bell in the head.

Investigators said Carter was jealous and possessive of his girlfriend, a member of the gymnastics team. Police allege that Carter and Coleman followed Bell with the intent to scare him and his teammates away from the woman. Bell was a basketball player at the university and was described by coaches as a leader on and off the court.
