Uber Eats driver killed by his own van in Chicago carjacking

A 28-year-old Uber Eats driver in Chicago was fatally struck by his own van during a carjacking after completing a delivery. Police arrested 33-year-old Montoya Perry in connection with the incident. The event occurred outside Loretto Hospital early on February 23.

Daniel Figueroa, a 28-year-old man working two jobs to support his family, had just finished an Uber Eats delivery at Loretto Hospital in Chicago when his van was stolen. Around 2 a.m. on February 23, surveillance cameras captured Figueroa exiting the hospital to find three people—two men and a woman—taking his vehicle. As he attempted to intervene, he was dragged by the van for half a block before it sped away.

The doctor who ordered the food discovered Figueroa lying in the street and alerted authorities. Figueroa was transported to another hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police stated that he was "fatally struck by [his] vehicle as the offender fled." No official cause of death beyond this has been released.

On February 26, the Chicago Police Department announced the arrest of Montoya Perry, 33, charging him with murder and vehicular hijacking. Perry remains in custody without bond pending a court appearance on March 18. Details about the other two suspects have not been disclosed, and no additional arrests have been made.

Figueroa's girlfriend, Sandra Guerrero, told local ABC affiliate WLS that he had worked a shift at Amazon on Sunday before starting his late-night Uber Eats job. She described how Figueroa provided for her and her young son, whom he treated as his own. The incident has highlighted the risks faced by delivery workers in the city.
