Wanga: ODM will not issue direct tickets in 2027

ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga has promised Nyanza supporters that the party will hold open primaries in the 2027 general elections to prevent politician defections and maintain its influence.

Gladys Wanga, ODM chairperson and Homa Bay governor, has warned Nyanza politicians against false promises of direct party nominations.

“Do not let anyone tell you that because they are close to me or party leader Dr Oburu Oginga, they will get a direct ODM certificate. Anyone seeking an ODM ticket must seek grassroots endorsement,” Wanga said.

In the 2022 Homa Bay elections, six of eight parliamentary candidates received direct tickets, including Wanga herself. Finance Minister John Mbadi withdrew from the gubernatorial race after late Raila Odinga convinced Oyugi Magwanga to be her deputy. ODM now plans open primaries instead.

“The party will conduct fair selections and give equal opportunity to all aspirants. It is the people who will decide who flies the ODM flag,” Wanga said. She stressed protecting ODM strongholds to boost national influence.

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma agreed, urging UDA politicians to join ODM as it holds sway in the region.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has confirmed Oburu Odinga as its party leader at a Special Delegates Conference (SDC) held on March 27, 2026, at Jamhuri Grounds in Nairobi. Delegates rejected Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as deputy leader for lacking a proposer and seconder, referring his replacement to the National Executive Committee (NEC). A parallel meeting was held by the faction led by Edwin Sifuna.

Three months after ODM announced plans for talks with UDA, party chairperson Gladys Wanga detailed an emerging equal partnership agreement to protect strongholds ahead of the 2027 elections, including mechanisms for consultations on key government decisions.

ODM party chairperson Gladys Wanga has dismissed plans by the Linda Mwananchi faction for a parallel National Delegates Conference, terming it a plot to mislead members. She insisted that only the National Executive Committee has authority to convene such a meeting. Her remarks followed Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna's announcement that he would not attend the official NDC.

Leaders of Linda Mwananchi within ODM have issued strong rejections against the Linda Ground faction led by Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga. They say they will not reconcile until political decisions made after Raila Odinga's death are reversed. They also demand halting talks with UDA and full implementation of the 10-point agenda.
