Yash Raj Films praised director Aditya Dhar and his team on social media on Wednesday, as Ranveer Singh's film Dhurandhar continued its strong performance on day 34. The movie has become the highest-grossing Hindi film ever and is aiming for Rs 1,300 crore. This success is raising questions about the future of Yash Raj's Spy Universe.
Dhurandhar, released on December 5, 2025, continues to dominate the box office a month after its debut. According to trade site Sacnilk, on day 34 (fifth Wednesday), the film earned approximately Rs 4.25 crore in India for the Hindi version, a slight 10.53 percent drop from the previous day's Rs 4.75 crore. Overall Hindi occupancy stood at 10.69 percent, rising from 6.69 percent in morning shows to a peak of 12.90 percent in the evening.
The film now ranks fourth all-time among Indian movies, behind Dangal (Rs 2,070.3 crore), Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (Rs 1,788.06 crore), and Pushpa 2: The Rule (Rs 1,742.1 crore), as it aims for Rs 1,300 crore. Despite pre-release controversies involving Ranveer Singh and Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1, along with canceled press shows and reports of prints not reaching theaters, it shattered records to become the highest-grossing Hindi film ever. Akshaye Khanna has emerged as a national heartthrob, Rakesh Bedi has rediscovered his groove, and Shashwat Sachdev is being hailed as the next big talent.
Amid this, director Aditya Dhar, despite his contentious politics, has garnered accolades from filmmakers like Ram Gopal Varma, Anurag Kashyap, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, and Karan Johar. Yash Raj Films joined the praise with a tweet on January 7, 2026: “Dhurandhar is not merely a film… it is a milestone in Indian cinema that will be remembered forever. Congratulations to Aditya Dhar and Jio Studios for creating the highest-grossing Indian film of all time (in a single language).”
The film has been repeatedly compared to Yash Raj's Spy Universe—Tiger, War, and Pathaan—which has faced criticism for its Hollywood-style storytelling. Discussions highlight Dhurandhar's raw, grounded sensibilities against the glossy, Westernized aesthetics of the Spy Universe. While the latter rests on sensible, secular politics, Dhurandhar has been critiqued for a bigoted vision. With underwhelming performances from Tiger 3 and War 2, and delays for Alpha, the Spy Universe's future looks uncertain. Suggestions for YRF include exploring new genres, like last year's hit romantic musical Saiyaara.
