31 projects selected in Uppsala municipality citizen budget

Voting in the 2025–2026 citizen budget for rural areas has concluded. Out of 43 proposals, 31 projects will be carried out with a total budget of 2.3 million kronor.

The citizen budget has become a permanent feature in Uppsala municipality following a pilot project that ran from 2018 to 2024. Residents in five geographical areas have voted on projects funded directly from the municipal budget. Each area receives 460 000 kronor to allocate.

Among the approved projects are several that strengthen local gathering spots and nature experiences. Examples include benches at Tomta wetland for 23 000 kronor and a pump track in Gunsta for 290 000 kronor. Other efforts cover an outdoor gym in Tuna and tree planting at Storvreta swimming pool.

The process relies on residents proposing and prioritising ideas themselves. Many projects connect to local councils and associations in areas such as Rasbo, Almunge and Järlåsa. The restored Tomtasjön, reopened in 2025, is cited as an example of how the funds can deliver lasting benefits for residents of all ages.
