AfDB approves $110 million for Aysha wind power project

The African Development Bank has approved up to $110 million to advance Ethiopia's largest wind power project. The funding supports the 300 MW Aysha facility in the Somali Region.

The African Development Bank Group approved financing that includes $80 million from the bank itself along with $20 million from the Clean Technology Fund and $10 million from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa. The package forms part of a total $508 million investment for the project developed by AMEA Power.

The facility will include a 300 MW wind farm, a 5-kilometer transmission line and upgrades to the Aysha II substation. Ethiopian Electric Power will purchase power under a 25-year agreement.

Finance Minister Ahmed Shide called the project a cornerstone of national energy policy. Wale Shonibare of the AfDB noted it shows how governments, partners and investors can address bankability issues.

The approval follows a process that started in December 2023 with power purchase agreements finalized in August 2024. It builds on the earlier 120 MW phase of Aysha II inaugurated in January 2026.
