African CDC secures major pandemic funding

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has welcomed the approval of 500 million dollars from the Pandemic Fund, with Africa receiving nearly half the allocation. The decision came from a board meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, aimed at bolstering health preparedness across the continent. Ethiopia stands to benefit from the resources.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) announced a significant boost to continental health efforts following the Pandemic Fund's Third Call for Proposals. On November 22, 2025, the organization highlighted the approval of 500 million dollars, of which Africa is slated to receive almost half. This funding targets strengthening core capacities in African Union Member States, with a focus on high-risk and cross-border regions to enhance pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.

The approval was revealed during the Pandemic Fund Board Meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, from November 17 to 19, 2025. Africa CDC emphasized that this reflects the continent's increasing capability in developing technically sound proposals. 'Preparedness is essential to preventing health crises,' the organization stated, underscoring the need to translate funds into on-the-ground actions that improve community safety and reinforce health security and sovereignty.

Africa CDC praised the collaboration between the Pandemic Fund Board and global partners for advancing these goals. Countries like Ethiopia are positioned to gain from the initiative, which supports practical enhancements in health infrastructure. Meanwhile, Ethiopian authorities are actively monitoring the Marburg virus outbreak, reporting four confirmed deaths and eight cases under investigation from 46 laboratory tests conducted.

This development arrives amid ongoing efforts to build resilience against future pandemics, building on lessons from recent global health challenges.
