After mountain rescues on Kebnekaise – chief expects more

Mountain rescue teams have responded three days in a row to retrieve hikers on Kebnekaise. More callouts are expected during peak season.

In recent days, mountain rescue teams in the Kiruna mountains have handled three operations on Kebnekaise. Marit Sarri, area manager in Norrbotten for the Swedish Tourist Association, notes that peak season has just begun.

"We have just entered high season and it shows, we have many people in the area", says Sarri. She expects a total of 20 to 30 callouts before summer ends.

Most hikers are described as relatively well prepared. Sarri advises contacting staff at the mountain station or a guide, and using information from the Mountain Safety Council and STF websites.
