Al Green releases surprise soulful EP

Al Green has unveiled a new four-track EP featuring soulful covers of classic songs. The release, available digitally via Fat Possum Records, includes collaborations and reimaginings that highlight his enduring voice. This project marks another chapter in the legendary singer's multifaceted career.

Al Green, the iconic Memphis soul singer, dropped a surprise EP on Friday, consisting of four tracks that reimagine beloved songs from various eras. The digital collection features his rendition of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody," an updated version of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" with British singer-songwriter RAYE, The Velvet Underground's "I Found a Reason," and a previously released take on R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts."

In a statement, Green expressed his enthusiasm: "instant connection… The music spoke to me, so we immediately went to work." Produced by Matthew Johnson, the EP showcases Green's Hi Rhythm Section, including Reverend Charles Hodges on organ, Leroy Hodges on bass, Archie “Hubbie” Turner on piano, Will Sexton on guitar, and Steve Potts from Booker T & The MG's on drums.

Green's career began rising in the early 1970s with hits such as “Let’s Stay Together,” “Tired of Being Alone,” and “I’m Still in Love with You.” Collaborating with producer Willie Mitchell at Hi Records, he helped define Memphis soul's warm sound, earning 11 Grammy Awards and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

After a spiritual shift in the late 1970s, Green turned toward gospel music and became a pastor, while still recording across genres. His recent ventures into mainstream soul, including artist collaborations, have been warmly received by fans, adding depth to his legacy.
