Aleshea Harris has made her feature directorial debut with the Southern Gothic revenge thriller Is God Is. The film is now playing in theaters. Harris said she aims to establish her own style despite comparisons to other directors.
Harris told the Associated Press that she does not want to be seen as a poor man's Tarantino. She added that she is doing her own thing and hopes audiences recognize that. The film draws from influences including Greek tragedies, Westerns and fairytales as well as movies such as O Brother Where Art Thou Moonlight Lady Snowblood and Amélie.
