Amazon casts Callum Vinson as Atreus in God of War series

Amazon's live-action adaptation of the 2018 God of War game has announced Callum Vinson as the young actor playing Kratos's son Atreus. Vinson brings experience from roles including a young Jason Voorhees in the upcoming Crystal Lake series and voicing Piglet in recent Winnie the Pooh projects. The series, set in Norse mythology, continues to build its cast with several familiar names from the games and beyond.

Amazon is developing a live-action series based on the 2018 God of War video game, which reimagines the franchise in Norse mythology. Production has not yet started, but casting details are emerging, with the project in pre-production and executive producer Cory Barlog from Santa Monica Studio involved. No release date has been set, though the series has already been approved for a second season.

The latest announcement centers on Callum Vinson, a child actor cast as Atreus, the co-lead and son of the protagonist Kratos. Vinson's resume includes voicing Piglet in iterations of Winnie the Pooh, appearing in series such as Poker Face and Chucky, and playing a young Jason Voorhees in the Peacock prequel Crystal Lake, set to premiere later this year. He also voices Lope in Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island and has an upcoming role in season three of Netflix's The Night Agent.

Joining Vinson is Ryan Hurst as Kratos, the god of war. Hurst previously voiced Thor in the God of War games, including Ragnarok, marking a shift as he becomes the first non-Black actor to portray Kratos, a role originally voiced by a Black actor in earlier entries. Alastair Duncan reprises his role as Mimir, the wise advisor from the games, bringing back his standout voice performance to live-action.

The ensemble includes Danny Woodburn as Brok and Jeff Gulka as Sindri, the dwarven brothers known for their banter. Max Parker portrays Heimdall, appearing in the first season despite debuting later in the Ragnarok game. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, recognized from Severance, plays Thor, while Mandy Patinkin takes on Odin, succeeding Richard Schiff from the game. Teresa Palmer joins as Sif, Thor's wife.

Directing the first two episodes is Frederick E.O. Toye. The series promises to adapt the rich character roster from the games, though casting for figures like Freya and Baldur remains unannounced.
