Avalanche triggered by snowmobiles near Sorsele – no injuries

A large avalanche was triggered by four snowmobile drivers at Guvertfjället just south of Ammarnäs in Sorsele municipality on Friday. The rescue operation involving helicopters, avalanche dogs, and mountain rescuers ended without finding any injured people.

The alarm about the avalanche reached police around 2 p.m. on Friday. Four snowmobile drivers were observed in the area with snowmobile trails at Guvertfjället, and mountain rescuer Joakim Åberg said it was triggered when they "drove near the slope and played around".

The avalanche was described as very large, at least 800 meters wide and up to 500 meters high, with a crown up to six meters, according to Åberg. Mountain rescuers, police, helicopter, snowmobiles, and four avalanche dogs searched the large area starting at 3:12 p.m.

Police spokesperson Elin Andersson confirmed the operation: "An avalanche has gone, we have initiated mountain rescue with helicopter, snowmobiles, and avalanche dog". By 5:25–5:30 p.m., it was confirmed that no one was injured and the operation ended.

No person was missing according to initial reports from the snowmobile drivers.
