Bill Self updates Darryn Peterson's injury status before UCF game

Kansas head coach Bill Self offered a cautious update on freshman Darryn Peterson's hamstring and quad issues ahead of the Jayhawks' Big 12 opener against UCF. Peterson has been practicing but remains uncertain for the game. The team and Peterson's family agree he should only return when fully healthy.

For the past two months, Kansas Jayhawks freshman Darryn Peterson has battled persistent quad and hamstring cramps, limiting his play during the early season. After appearing in the first two games, he missed seven straight contests and made a short comeback in two more before cramping recurred, forcing him out again.

In his first media session since Christmas, held on Monday evening, coach Bill Self addressed Peterson's status as the team prepares to travel to Orlando for the matchup with UCF. "Yes, he’s practicing," Self said. "I don’t have any status beyond that, but yes, he’s definitely out there practicing the whole time."

Self emphasized a collaborative approach with Peterson's family, prioritizing full recovery. "I’m just going to go with what everybody believes to be what’s best," he added. "I’ve been in agreement with everybody so far, but it’s getting to the point now where you know it’s — I think he’s really, really close — and hopefully he’ll feel really good the rest of this week of practice."

This aligns with previous updates, where Self has noted Peterson's progress in practice without committing to a return timeline. Hamstring injuries pose challenges, as symptoms can linger without clear MRI evidence and re-emerge unexpectedly. The family decided post-Davidson win that Peterson would sit until 100% ready.

"We're in agreement with the family that he should not play until he feels good," Self explained. "We're in agreement. I'm not inside his head or his body, that I can determine if he feels good enough or not. That's up to him. But he wants to be out there. He's just not quite ready."

As an NBA Draft prospect, Peterson's long-term health takes precedence, but his absence could hinder Kansas's Big 12 aspirations.

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain during Thursday's 139-96 blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, confirmed by MRI on Friday. The injury rules him out for the remainder of the regular season—and likely into the playoffs—with a typical 4-6 week recovery. His agent plans an extraordinary circumstances grievance for awards eligibility after playing 64 games.
