The sequel to the 2021 horror hit The Black Phone arrives on Peacock on January 16, bringing back director Scott Derrickson and star Ethan Hawke. The film, which grossed over $125 million at the box office, continues the story of siblings Finney and Gwen as they confront lingering trauma and a vengeful phantom.
Blumhouse's Black Phone 2, directed by Scott Derrickson, hit theaters in October 2025, following the success of the original 2021 film that earned $161 million worldwide. The sequel reunites Derrickson with screenwriter C. Robert Cargill and features Ethan Hawke reprising his role as the sinister Grabber, now haunting protagonists Finney Blake (Mason Thames) and his sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) from beyond the grave.
Set four years after the events of the first movie, the story explores the siblings' ongoing struggle with trauma while unraveling the mystery of their telekinetic abilities. The Grabber, seeking revenge for his demise in the original, returns as a lethal phantom. Returning cast members include Miguel Mora and Jeremy Davies, alongside newcomers Arianna Rivas, Demián Bichir, Maev Beaty, Graham Abbey, and Anna Lore.
The film premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2025 and achieved $125 million in global box office earnings, a solid performance amid a sluggish October for releases. Adapted from Joe Hill's 2005 short story in the anthology 20th Century Ghosts, the sequel incorporates contributions from Hill to its narrative. Jason Blum produced both films alongside Derrickson and Cargill, with Universal Pictures handling distribution.
While the follow-up did not surpass the original's box office haul, it maintains the eerie tone that made the first a standout in horror. Streaming on Peacock will allow wider access to this continuation of the chilling tale.
