The St. Louis Blues secured a 2-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday afternoon at Enterprise Center, completing a back-to-back sweep after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 the previous night. Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington earned his first shutout of the season and 19th of his career, stopping all 25 Montreal shots. He had struggled recently, allowing three or more goals in seven of his prior nine starts, including six against Colorado in his last outing.
Jonatan Berggren opened the scoring at 10:48 of the first period. Following a turnover in the Montreal zone, Cam Fowler carried the puck down the slot, faked a shot, and passed to Berggren in the right faceoff circle for a one-timer, assisted by Otto Stenberg.
In the second period, Robert Thomas extended the lead to 2-0 at 10:13 with his second short-handed goal of the season. Thomas intercepted a pass from Lane Hutson in the neutral zone, leading to a backhand finish on a loose puck at the left side of the net, assisted by Alexey Toropchenko.
The Blues' penalty kill proved crucial, going 4-for-4, including a 1:37 5-on-3 advantage for Montreal where Binnington made six saves with Colton Parayko and Brayden Schenn off for penalties. Canadiens goaltender Jacob Fowler made 17 saves in the loss.
St. Louis improved to 17-18-8, while Montreal fell to 22-13-6, snapping their seven-game point streak (5-0-2). The Blues also marked head coach Jim Montgomery's 400th NHL game. Montreal heads to Dallas for Sunday's game, and St. Louis travels to Chicago on Wednesday.
