BMKG predicts extreme weather next week

Indonesia's Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) warns of extreme weather across various regions next week, including heavy rain and strong winds that could trigger floods and landslides. The increased rain intensity is influenced by tropical cyclone Fung-Wong and other atmospheric activities. The public is urged to heighten vigilance, especially from November 10-16, 2025.

Entering mid-November 2025, Indonesia's BMKG has issued an early warning regarding increased rainfall that could lead to hydrometeorological disasters. Deputi for Meteorology at BMKG, Guswanto, explained that key factors include tropical cyclone Fung-Wong in the eastern Philippine Sea, moving northwest toward Luzon and indirectly impacting areas with increased rain clouds and wind speeds in North Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and northern Papua.

"Some main factors influencing the weather dynamics during this period include tropical cyclone Fung-Wong, Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity, as well as Kelvin and equatorial Rossby atmospheric waves predicted to remain active in Indonesian regions until mid-November 2025," Guswanto stated in a press release on November 11, 2025.

The combination of MJO phase 5 in the Maritime Continent with Rossby and Kelvin waves will enhance convective cloud formation across western, central, and eastern Indonesia over the next week. BMKG's Director of Public Meteorology, Andri Ramdhani, added that the period of November 10-16, 2025, holds significant potential for extreme weather.

"Based on BMKG analysis, moderate to heavy rain potential on November 10-12, 2025, is expected in most of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, DKI Jakarta, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara," Andri clarified. Alert areas for heavy to very heavy rain include Aceh, Bengkulu, Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, North Maluku, West Papua, and others.

On November 11, 2025, BMKG forecaster Yohanes predicted light rain to thunderstorms in most major cities, from Sumatra such as Padang and Jambi, to Java like Bandung and Semarang, and eastern regions like Kupang and Pontianak. BMKG also warns of waves 2.5-4 meters high in the western Indian Ocean from Mentawai Islands to Bengkulu, as well as rob floods along coasts of Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung, Banten, Jakarta, and others. High temperatures up to 34 degrees Celsius are forecast for Pangkal Pinang, Serang, and Surabaya.
