Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical reimagines classic in Manila

The world premiere of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical will take place at The Theater at Solaire from July 8 to 26. Resident director Drew Cipollone described the production as innovative, featuring new technology, expanded set design, and actual magic to bring the audience's imagination to life. It includes beloved songs from the original film alongside new original numbers.

On January 8, Broadway Asia held a press launch for its production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Manila. Resident director Drew Cipollone stated, “This amazing adaptation in live theater will bring our audience’s imagination to life. We’re so thrilled to bring this to you because it is very innovative, with new technology, expanded set design, and actual magic.” The musical stays true to Roald Dahl's 1964 story but adds enhancements like projections, LED screens, 3D mapping, and bubbles extending into the auditorium for an immersive experience.

New York-based Daniel Plimpton portrays Willy Wonka, introducing tap dancing and illusion tricks to the role for the first time. “Being him is like hosting a big party. You get the thrill from having everyone around you, but at the end of it, they do their own things and you feel alone,” Plimpton shared. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Cohen Toukatly from Texas makes his Broadway debut as Charlie Bucket. “I have only been doing community theater since 2023. I had recently done Charlie and the Chocolate Factory back at home and a couple of people suggested I audition for the Broadway Asia production,” he recounted.

Changes include tweaks to dialogue and story arcs, plus an interactive sing-along that might feature a Filipino song. Highlights are Willy Wonka's grand magical entrance in Act One and the duet with Charlie in Act Two. Tickets go on public sale January 17 at ticketworld.com.ph. This production blends the familiar with fresh elements, appealing to Filipino audiences who appreciate spectacle.
