China's organ donation volunteers exceed 7.3 million

As of December 31, 2025, China has recorded over 63,000 organ donation cases, involving more than 197,000 organs that have saved over 190,000 recipients. The number of registered volunteers has surpassed 7.3 million. Deputy Director Zhang Zongwei of the China Organ Donation Administrative Center stated that this reflects progress in social civilization.

China's organ donation efforts have achieved remarkable progress. According to the latest data from the China Organ Donation Administrative Center, as of the end of 2025, the country has accumulated over 63,000 organ donation cases nationwide, with more than 197,000 organs donated, successfully saving the lives of over 190,000 recipients.

Zhang Zongwei, deputy director of the center, revealed at a media briefing on Monday that the total number of registered organ donation volunteers has exceeded 7.3 million. Among posthumous donors, 19 percent were women and 81 percent men, with the highest proportion—40.2 percent—aged between 46 and 60.

In 2025, more than 40 new memorial sites for organ donors were established in cities at the county level and above, bringing the national total to 316. Since pilot programs launched in 2010, over the past 15 years, China has developed a well-established organ donation system from scratch. The quantity and quality of donations and transplants have steadily improved, with post-transplant survival rates reaching world-leading levels. Zhang stated that this contributes Chinese wisdom to global organ donation development.

At the briefing, representatives shared stories of recipients and donor families gaining a "second life." During the 2025 National Day holiday, teenager Lu Qile, who loved singing, running, and traveling, was involved in a traffic accident in Xiamen, Fujian Province. After being declared brain-dead, his parents decided to donate his heart, liver, lungs, two kidneys, and corneas, giving five critically ill patients a new chance at life and restoring sight to two blind individuals. Lu's father said, "He loved Xiamen the most, and his corneas remain there."

To support organ donation, Dingxi in Gansu Province and Shanwei in Guangdong Province have recently introduced regulations classifying human organ donation as an act of "heroism." Over the past two years, many regions across the country have implemented similar measures.
