China announced sanctions on Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and his family on Thursday over his remarks on China.
The sanctions prohibit Teodoro, his spouse and child from entering the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao. Organizations and individuals in China are barred from any transaction or cooperation with them.
A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the measures uphold China's sovereignty, security and development interests. The spokesperson added that Teodoro's repeated remarks undermined China's legitimate interests and damaged bilateral relations.
Analysts described the move as a warning to Manila. Retired Philippine Supreme Court justice Antonio Carpio called for a reciprocal ban on China's defense minister and family.
