Christopher Paolini provides update on Disney's Eragon TV adaptation

Christopher Paolini has shared a positive update on the Disney+ TV series adaptation of his Eragon novels. The project is advancing toward pre-production after developing a pilot script approved by Disney. Paolini expressed satisfaction with the creative choices made so far.

The Eragon novels, part of The Inheritance Cycle, began with the first book published in 2002, written by Paolini as a teenager. The story follows Eragon, a farmboy who finds a dragon egg that hatches into Saphira, leading him to become a Dragon Rider in a rebellion against King Galbatorix. The series includes sequels Eldest in 2005, Brisingr in 2008, and Inheritance in 2011.

A 2006 live-action film adaptation was a box office failure and drew criticism from fans for significant deviations from the books. Now, Disney+ is developing a TV series, with Paolini involved in the process. In a recent video on X, he praised showrunner Todd Harfin, known for work on Psych and High Potential, and writer Carrie Williamson, who is scripting the Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill.

Paolini described the project's status as just before pre-production. "Getting to this stage has actually been a big step," he said. "Todd Harfin and I had to come up with a pilot that Disney really liked. We had to digest everything about the material, how to stay true to Eragon and Saphira's story, while also adapting this for visual media. And there's many choices that have to be made along the way. And so far, I've been happy with the choices, so I want you to feel good about that as well. That said, this is a long process, but we are really close to this hopefully going full bore into production."

He noted limitations on sharing details due to behind-the-scenes decisions. Paolini reflected on the timeline, mentioning the original film came out in 2006, 20 years prior to 2026, and he began working on Eragon in 1998. "And I will say it's pretty exciting for me to be in this position after, well, geez, we're in 2026 now, and the Eragon film came out in 2006, near the end of it, but still. So we're now 20 years since the film, and I started working on Eragon back in 1998. So to say this is surreal is an understatement, but it's very welcome, and I'm super happy to be in this position, and I'm only in this position, and the franchise is only in this position because of the support of all of the awesome fandom, and that big push everyone did with the tweet storm and stuff a few years ago really did make the difference with Disney. So from me to you, thank you."

The adaptation aims to stay faithful to the source material, similar to the approach taken with the Percy Jackson series, where each season covers one book. Paolini is also developing other projects in the Alagaësia world and promises more updates. The original Eragon film is available on Disney+, while the TV series has no announced release date.
