Delhi's air quality reaches hazardous levels

Delhi-NCR's air quality index (AQI) reached 559 on November 23, 2025, falling into the hazardous category. Authorities advised limiting outdoor activities and wearing masks. Pollution control measures under GRAP have been tightened.

Delhi-NCR residents woke up to a blanket of smog on November 23, 2025, with the air quality index (AQI) reaching 559 according to AQI.in, placing it in the hazardous category. However, the air quality early warning system reported it at 380 (very poor). AQI categories include good (0-50), satisfactory (50-100), moderately polluted (100-200), poor (200-300), very poor (300-400), and severe (400-500), with above 500 considered hazardous.

On Saturday, the AQI was 370 (very poor), and Sunday offered little relief. According to Hindustan Times, the AQI crossed 400, with areas like Wazirpur and Bawana recording over 450 (hazardous). The NCR region is also grappling with poor air quality.

The Regional Meteorological Centre forecasts mainly clear skies with shallow fog in the morning, maximum temperature around 25-27°C, and minimum 10-12°C.

Following Supreme Court observations, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) revised the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), shifting several actions to earlier stages, including staggered timings, expanded public transport, and work-from-home options. The Delhi government issued an advisory for private offices to operate at 50% onsite workforce capacity, with the rest working from home. CAQM imposed GRAP Stage-III when AQI is in or threatens the 401-450 range.

Health effects are severe, especially on children who spend time outdoors, causing watery eyes, asthmatic symptoms, itchy skin, and more. High AQI can lead to persistent coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, itchy throat, and burning eyes. Residents should avoid outdoor exposure, wear N-95 masks if venturing out, skip exercises like jogging or yoga, and note that schools have halted outdoor activities. Use air filters at home or in cars optimally, and seek medical help for respiratory issues.
