The Detroit Pistons have risen to No. 1 in NBA.com's week 15 power rankings, displacing the Oklahoma City Thunder amid a strong season. The San Antonio Spurs slipped to fourth after a 8-8 stretch since Christmas, while the Cleveland Cavaliers maintained their No. 10 position following three consecutive road victories. These rankings reflect performances through the second quarter of the NBA season, with all teams having played at least 41 games.

The NBA's week 15 power rankings, compiled by John Schuhmann for NBA.com, highlight shifts in team standings as the season reaches its midpoint. The Pistons, with a 33-11 record according to parallel reports from The Athletic, earned the top spot due to their elite defense (second in the league at 108.6 rating) and consistent play, including a key win over the Boston Celtics. This marks a departure from the Thunder, who sit at No. 2 after holding the No. 1 position previously.

The Spurs, once atop the rankings, fell to No. 4 despite remaining second in the Western Conference and ranking in the top 10 for both offensive and defensive efficiency. Schuhmann noted, “The Spurs are just 8-8 since they beat the Thunder for the third time on Christmas Day, a stretch that includes losses to the Jazz, Grizzlies and Pelicans.” Last week, San Antonio split games against the Utah Jazz (wins) and lost to the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans. They face the Rockets again on Wednesday, followed by road games against the Charlotte Hornets and a home matchup with the Orlando Magic.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers stayed at No. 10 for the second straight week, bolstered by five wins in their last six games, including road triumphs over the Philadelphia 76ers (twice) and Magic. Now seven games over .500 for the first time, Cleveland has managed without Darius Garland for the past five games. Schuhmann observed, “The Cavs have been without Darius Garland for the last five games, but they’re now seven games over .500 for the first time. They’ve won five of their last six, a stretch that includes three huge road wins over the Sixers (twice) and Magic.” The team, which is 13-6 without Garland but with Donovan Mitchell, has outscored opponents by just 11 points in those games overall. They host the Magic on Monday before a five-game road trip starting in Phoenix.

Other top teams include the New York Knicks (No. 9), Boston Celtics (No. 8), Minnesota Timberwolves (No. 7), Phoenix Suns (No. 6), Denver Nuggets (No. 5), Houston Rockets (No. 3), and Thunder (No. 2). In a separate ranking from The Athletic's Law Murray, the Thunder remain No. 1, with the Pistons at No. 2 and Rockets at No. 3, illustrating slight variances in analyst perspectives. These rankings balance recent performance with forward projections, emphasizing defensive strengths and injury impacts across the league.
