Egypt’s Ministry of Health launched new mental health clinics under the presidential “Your Health is Happiness” initiative, in partnership with Viatris Egypt. The move aims to expand psychological services and integrate them into the public healthcare system. Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar stated that mental health has become a core pillar of Egypt’s public health strategy.
At the launch event, Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar emphasized adopting a comprehensive health concept that includes psychological, social, and physical well-being. He highlighted key challenges such as overcoming social stigma around mental health and correcting misconceptions about psychological disorders.
Abdel Ghaffar added that Egypt is expanding support through dedicated hotlines and early detection programs in schools, universities, and workplaces. He said seeking mental health support should be seen as a responsible and positive step.
Ayman Abbas, Head of Mental Health and Addiction Services, stated the new clinics will provide early autism screening, assessments for depression and anxiety, addiction prevention programs, and psychological support for couples, women, and the elderly. The services will also integrate into treatment for chronic diseases and cancer.
The General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation announced specialized national standards for mental health services, along with intensive training for healthcare workers, to incorporate them into the universal health insurance system. The ministry noted the initiative has conducted millions of screenings, trained staff, and integrated services into primary care units for the first time. Further expansion is planned nationwide, with Viatris Egypt supporting by enhancing treatment options and access.
