Emma Raducanu heads to Transylvania Open as top seed

After a second-round exit at the Australian Open, Emma Raducanu is set to compete as the top seed at the Transylvania Open in Romania. The British player will face Greet Minnen in her opening match from February 1-7. Raducanu recently parted ways with her coach Francis Roig.

Emma Raducanu, currently ranked No 29 in the WTA live rankings, begins her next tournament at the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. As the top seed, she opens against Belgium's Greet Minnen in the last-32 stage. A victory would pit her against either Romanian wildcard Elena Bertea, world No 303, or Kaja Juvan, world No 100, in the second round. Her projected quarter-final opponent is seventh seed Olga Danilovic, ranked No 69.

The 23-year-old, born in Toronto, Canada, and standing at 5ft 9in, ended her 2025 season early in October due to illness after the China Open. That year, she reached the semi-finals of the Washington WTA 500, defeating Naomi Osaka and Maria Sakkari before losing to Anna Kalinskaya. She also made quarter-finals at the Miami Open and Queen's Club, falling to Qinwen Zheng in the latter.

Raducanu's 2026 season started with a return at the United Cup, where she lost to Sakkari and disclosed a two-and-a-half-month injury layoff. She exited the Hobart International in the quarter-finals to Taylah Preston, 6-2 6-4. At the Australian Open, seeded 28th, she beat Mananchaya Sawangkaew in the first round but fell to Anastasia Potapova in straight sets in the second.

In 2025 Grand Slams, she advanced to the third round at the Australian Open before losing to Iga Swiatek, second round at the French Open to Swiatek, third round at Wimbledon to Aryna Sabalenka after beating Marketa Vondrousova, and third round at the US Open to Elena Rybakina, 6-1 6-2. Her only Grand Slam title remains the 2021 US Open.

On January 29, 2026, Raducanu split with coach Francis Roig after less than six months, the Spaniard who aided Rafael Nadal's 16 Grand Slam wins. This marks her ninth coaching change in five years since her 2021 breakthrough, with her longest stint at 13 months. She previously worked with Mark Petchey and parted from Nick Cavaday in January 2025. Sky Sports commentator Jonathan Overend noted, "I don't necessarily disagree with the strategy of Raducanu. She's got to feel like the relationship is right."
