Fadnavis calls BJP's local body poll win a trailer for BMC elections

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has described the BJP's strong performance in local body elections as a trailer for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls due in January 2026. He attributed the results to public endorsement of the Mahayuti government's development model. Prime Minister Modi echoed that the outcome reflects trust in people-centric development.

In recent local body elections in Maharashtra, the BJP delivered a strong performance in municipal councils and nagar panchayats. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described this victory as a trailer for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls scheduled for January 2026. He stated, 'The BJP’s victory in municipal council and municipal panchayats is a trailer. It shows how things will unfold in BMC polls,' implying efforts to dislodge Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Mumbai civic body.

Fadnavis attributed the mandate to good governance and the Mahayuti government's development model. He noted, 'Today’s mandate was for good governance and development model of the Mahayuti government. What makes this elections so special is the public trust in development agenda.' He urged party workers to strive harder for future victories and expressed gratitude to Maharashtra's people for the overwhelming support to BJP and Mahayuti, crediting dedicated karyakartas for the success.

He highlighted the party's expansion since 2014, extending beyond urban areas to rural parts, with the vote base remaining intact despite a poor showing in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, the opposition has cried foul over the results. According to Hindustan Times, the BJP views the outcome as an endorsement of its development-centric campaign, while the Maha Vikas Aghadi alleges irregularities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the results reflect people’s trust in 'people-centric development.'

Elections for 29 municipal corporations, including BMC, are set for January 15, 2026.
