Hulu cancels Stephen King's Castle Rock after two seasons

Hulu's anthology series Castle Rock, inspired by Stephen King's works, ended after two seasons in 2019. The cancellation stemmed from production conflicts involving Warner Bros. and streaming platforms. Despite praise from critics and fans, the show did not receive a third season.

The horror series Castle Rock aired on Hulu from 2018 to 2019, spanning two seasons. Set within Stephen King's multiverse, it introduced new characters alongside familiar figures from his stories. Season 2 notably featured Annie Wilkes, portrayed by Lizzy Caplan, while other episodes included John "Ace" Merrill, played by Paul Sparks, a character from the adaptation Stand by Me. The show also referenced various elements from King's lore.

A 2020 Deadline report attributed the series' end to behind-the-scenes network dynamics. Warner Bros., the producer, had shifted focus to creating original content for HBO Max. This made continuing a series on Disney-owned Hulu untenable, akin to a corporate rivalry. Warner Bros. chose not to relocate Castle Rock to HBO Max.

Viewers and critics responded positively, with the series earning strong ratings on platforms like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic. It concluded without weaker follow-up seasons, preserving its reputation. The timing coincided with the release of It: Chapter Two in theaters shortly before Castle Rock's finale. Warner Bros. later announced plans for IT: Welcome to Derry, expanding the It franchise.

Castle Rock's cancellation reflected challenges in the early streaming wars, where platform loyalties influenced content decisions.
