Hulu reveals first look at 'The Testaments' Handmaid's Tale sequel

Hulu has unveiled the first look photos for 'The Testaments,' the upcoming sequel series to 'The Handmaid's Tale,' set to premiere in April 2026. Based on Margaret Atwood's 2019 novel, the show follows a new generation of young women in Gilead fighting for freedom. The images were first revealed at the CCXP film festival in São Paulo, Brazil.

Overview

'The Testaments' continues the dystopian world of 'The Handmaid's Tale,' set years after the events of the original series. The story centers on a coming-of-age narrative where young women, raised entirely in the theocratic regime of Gilead, confront a future of servitude and seek allies to escape. With no memories of the world before Gilead, they grapple with indoctrination while plotting their path to freedom.

Cast and Production

The ensemble cast features Ann Dowd, Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, and Birva Pandya. Bruce Miller, who created the original series, returns as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Warren Littlefield, Elisabeth Moss, Steve Stark, Shana Stein, Maya Goldsmith, John Weber, Sheila Hockin, Daniel Wilson, and Fran Sears. Mike Barker directs the first three episodes, with MGM Television as the studio behind the production.

Background and Premiere

Adapted from Margaret Atwood's 2019 novel, 'The Testaments' builds on the 1985 book that inspired 'The Handmaid's Tale,' which aired for six seasons on Hulu from 2017 until earlier this year. The first-look photos highlight the new characters and the ongoing struggle in Gilead. The series is slated for an April 2026 debut on Hulu, expanding the franchise's exploration of oppression and resistance.
