Hwang Dong-hyuk sets new Netflix crime drama The Dealer

Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator of the hit series Squid Game, has announced a new Netflix project titled The Dealer, a South Korean crime drama set in a casino. The series follows a skilled dealer entangled in illegal gambling after a personal setback. Netflix has greenlit production and revealed the principal cast.

Hwang Dong-hyuk, known for directing and creating Squid Game, is producing his next series for Netflix. Titled The Dealer, the project is a crime drama centered on the world of casinos and underground gambling. According to the official synopsis, the story follows Geonhwa, a gifted casino dealer whose wedding plans collapse after she falls victim to a housing scam. Forced back into a shadowy realm she had left behind, Geonhwa taps into long-suppressed supernatural abilities that give her an edge at the gambling tables as she seeks to regain control of her life.

Jung So-min, recognized from roles in Love Reset and Alchemy of Souls, stars as Geonhwa. She portrays a dealer who has repressed her extraordinary capabilities for years. Ryoo Seung-bum plays Hwang Chisu, a struggling gambler drawn into Geonhwa's dangerous scheme. Lee Soo-hyuk takes the role of Jo Jun, a sharp casino rival with an unpredictable presence. Ryu Kyung-soo appears as Choi Wooseung, Geonhwa's fiancé and a determined detective, contrasting his gentle home life with his professional resolve.

The screenplay was written by Ohnooy and Lee Tae-young. Choi Young-hwan, a cinematographer on films such as Smugglers, The Thieves, and Veteran, makes his directorial debut on the series. Production is handled by Firstman Studio, the same company behind Squid Game.

This announcement comes after the immense success of Squid Game, whose three seasons rank as Netflix's top non-English language series by viewership. While Hwang has teased further Squid Game spinoffs, The Dealer represents his next original endeavor with the streamer.
