Intense contest awaits in Mbeere North's two ward by-elections

Voters in Mbeere North will return to the polls on February 26, 2026, to elect representatives for the Muminji and Evurore wards. The seats fell vacant after two candidates resigned to contest the parliamentary by-election. Both opposition and the ruling UDA party pledge to secure the positions.

The Muminji and Evurore ward seats in Mbeere North became vacant after Newton Kariuki of the DEP party and independent candidate Duncan Mbui resigned to run in the area's parliamentary by-election. That by-election was won by Leonard Muthende of UDA.

The DEP and Democratic Party will field candidates in those wards. Kiambeere ward representative Lenny Masters stated that the opposition aims to win both seats. Speaking at the DEP national delegates conference on January 10 at K-Best Villa in Kanyuambora, Embu County, Masters added: “We will be vigilant to ensure there is no vote rigging like what we witnessed in the November 27 by-election.” The opposition will hold primaries soon to select its flag bearer.

UDA has nominated Peterson Njeru for Muminji and Duncan Muratia for Evurore. UDA's Embu coordinator, Lawrence Kamugane, said: “We held primaries and we are ready for the election.” DEP leader Lenny Kivuti confirmed that his party will remain in opposition.

The conference featured discussions on rebel MCAs from Meru who skipped the meeting. Secretary General Mugambi Imanyara threatened to expel the eight, stating: “They were invited by the party leader but chose to skip the meeting and must face disciplinary action.” National Chairman Titus Ntuchiu announced a major membership drive.

DEP will stay independent, defending devolution, equitable development, integrity in governance, and the rule of law. Kivuti said: “DEP is an independent party and it will handle national issues as an independent party and equal partner.” Delegates ratified national officials and committed to heeding grassroots opinions.
